ROME, Ga. - Lanstar Voice and Data, LLC has upgraded its hosted business phone system with new emergency-failover features intended to keep calls connected during power outages, internet disruptions and severe weather events common to North Georgia, the company announced Thursday.
The upgrade introduces redundant call routing, which automatically reroutes incoming calls to a mobile device, secondary location or voicemail-to-email if a business's primary internet connection goes down. The feature is aimed at addressing a frequent concern among business owners considering a hosted VoIP system: whether a cloud-based phone system can remain reliable when local infrastructure is disrupted.
"Businesses here have lived through enough summer storms to know that losing your phone line at the wrong moment can cost you customers," said the owner of Lanstar Voice and Data, LLC. "We wanted a failover system that keeps working even when the power doesn't."
A hosted VoIP phone system depends on an active internet connection, which means a power outage or internet outage can disrupt service unless a business has backup measures in place. Lanstar's new failover system addresses this by automatically forwarding calls to a designated backup number, and the company recommends pairing the service with an uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, for on-site routers and phone equipment to bridge short outages. For businesses in areas prone to extended outages, a cellular backup connection provides an additional layer of redundancy.
The redundant routing feature works by continuously monitoring a business's primary internet connection. If the connection drops, calls are automatically redirected within seconds to a pre-set backup number, such as an employee's cellphone or an answering service, without requiring the business to manually reroute anything. Once the primary connection is restored, routing reverts automatically.
Lanstar said the update was informed in part by feedback from local businesses affected by severe weather in recent storm seasons, when extended power outages disrupted phone service for companies still relying on traditional landlines. The company has also begun advising customers on backup power options for networking equipment, including recommendations for battery backup units sized to keep a router and VoIP adapter running during short-term outages.
In addition to the failover upgrade, Lanstar said it has worked with local internet service providers to help business customers evaluate secondary connections, such as a cellular hotspot or a second wired provider, as part of a broader business-continuity approach. The company said it does not sell hardware or internet service directly but provides guidance to help customers choose backup options compatible with their phone system.
The failover features are included at no additional cost for current hosted VoIP customers and are being offered as part of new business phone system installations going forward. Lanstar said the goal is to reduce the number of missed calls businesses experience during outages, particularly during Georgia's hurricane remnants and severe thunderstorm season, which typically peaks between late spring and early fall.
Business owners considering a switch to a hosted phone system can request a consultation to review current infrastructure and determine what backup measures, if any, are needed for their location.
